AVIGNON - LES BAUX DE PROVENCE & SAINT RÉMY DE PROVENCE
Enclosed by massive remparts, Avignon is one of the most fascinating towns in southern France. The Palais des Papes dominates, but the town contains others treasures such as splendid 17th- and 18th-century houses on rues Joseph Vernet or du Roi-René, fine churches, such as the Cathédrale de Notre Dame des Doms, and museums, such as the Musée Calvet. The Palais des Papes, where seven popes reigned, is a must to be visited.
You will then visit Les Baux de Provence, one of the strangest places in Provence, where the deserted citadel stands like a natural extension of a huge, rocky plateau. The living village below has a pleasant little square, the12th-century Eglise Saint Vincent and the Chapelle des Pénitents. You may enjoy a lunch stop in one of well-known gastronomical restaurants around Les Baux.
Near Les Baux, you will discover Saint Remy de Provence. This charming city's fame is mostly due to painter Vincent Van Gogh, who spent a year here and painted the famous Wheatfield with Cypress and Ravine. It is also the birthplace of Nostradamus, world-famous for his prophecies. At the Glanum, you may visit fascinating Roman ruins.
