ARLES - SAINT RÉMY DE PROVENCE & LES BAUX DE PROVENCE
The city of Arles combines all the charms of the Provence region. Its Roman remains, such as the arena and Constantin's baths, are complemented by the ochre walls and Roman-tiled roofs. Arles is a bastion of Provençal tradition and culture. You will see in particular: the Roman Amphitheatre, the Roman Theatre, the Palais Constantine, the Eglise S-Trophime and Espace Van Gogh. Arles is at the border of the Camargue. This area consist on 346.000 acres of wetlands, pastures, dunes and salt flats. You will enjoy seeing a unique collection of flora, including tamarisk and narcissi, and fauna such as egrets and ibises. You will probably also see flamingoes, black bulls, and white horses ridden by the "guardians" (cowboys).
You will then visit Saint Remy de Provence. Besides being a charming small city typical of Provence, with its boulevards, fountains and narrow streets, Saint Remy's fame is mostly due to painter Vincent Van Gogh, who spent a year here and painted the famous Wheatfield with Cypress and Ravine. It is also the birthplace of Nostradamus, world-famous for his prophecies. At the Glanum, you may visit the fascinating Roman ruins.
Nearby, you will enjoy seeing Les Baux de Provence, one of the strangest places in Provence, where the deserted citadel stands like a natural extension of a huge, rocky plateau. The living village below has a pleasant little square, the 12th-century Eglise Saint Vincent and the Chapelle des Pénitents.
