Fontainebleau's abiding charm comes from its relative informality and spectacular forest setting. The palace is unique in its bewildering cluster of styles from different periods, from Louis VII to Napoleonic. Its chief architectural influence derives from Renaissance King François 1er. The Salle de Bal, Galerie François 1er and Napoleon's apartments are the main places of interest.
Close-by the château, in the middle of the Fontainebleau forest, you may enjoy visiting the charming Barbizon village made famous by Rousseau and Millet, landscape painters who founded the Barbizon School.
