FULL DAY EXCURSIONS AVAILABLE FROM MARSEILLE

MARSEILLE - AIX EN PROVENCE & THE LUBERON REGION

You will start your excursion visiting Marseille, France's largest port and second-largest city. Marseille has close links with the Middle East and North Africa. You will walk through narrow, stepped streets and quiet squares and see fine 18th-century façades which contrast with the bustle of boulevard Canebiére and the Cité Radieuse, Le Corbusier's housing complex. You will see the old harbour, renowned for its daily fish market.

We will then drive you to Aix en Provence. Founded by the Romans in 103 BC, Aix en Provence is a centre of arts and learning. It has been called "the city of a thousands fountains". You will enjoy seeing some beautiful ones situated on the Cours Mirabeau. On this tree-lined avenue, you will see 17th- and 18th-century buildings and enjoy a stop in one of the numerous cafés that are so much a part of the city's social life. You will visit the Old Town which centres on the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, with its colourful flower market. The Atelier Paul Cézanne and the Musée des Tapisseries (tapestries) are among cultural places to be visited.

You will then visit the Lubéron  region, which combines wild areas with picturesque Provence villages, such as Roussillon with its red ochre buildings. You will also visit Gordes, a perched village, and close-by Village des Bories, a bizarre primitive habitat, whose construction techniques are thought to date back to Neolithic times.
