THE PAYS BASQUE
After a two hours' drive through some beautiful landscape, including the gorgeous Landes forest, you will reach the Pays Basque, whose people have maintained their own language and culture. The region's main coastal towns are Bayonne, Biarritz and Saint Jean de Luz.
At Bayonne, capital of the French pays Basque, you will see the 13th-century Cathedrale Sainte Marie. You will enjoy strolling along the arcaded rue du Port Neuf, where cafés serve hot chocolate, a Bayonne speciality. The city is also famous for its ham. You may visit the Musée Basque, which gives an excellent introduction to the customs and traditions of the Basque people.
On, then, to discover Biarritz, a favorite resort of the European nobility in the 19th century. Its popularity was assured when Empress Eugénie discovered its charms during the reign of her husband, Napoleon III. The town has nice beaches, good for surfing.
Finally, you will see Saint Jean de Luz, a typical fishing village along the Basque coast.
