Nicolas Fouquet, King Louis XIV's powerful court financier, challenged architect Le Vau and decorator Le Brun to create the most sumptuous palace of the day. The result, one of the greatest 17th-century French châteaux, surpassed Fouquet's dreams. See, in particular, the palace's magnificent frescoed ceilings.
Unlike Versailles or Fontainebleau, its many rooms feel touchingly intimate and the scale is not overwhelming. Vaux le Vicomte's continuing fame is due to André Le Nôtre's stunning gardens, the finest of the Ile de France region.
