VERSAILLES - CHARTRES

In the morning you will see the world-famous Versailles palace built for King XIV by architects Louis Le Vau and Jules Hardouin Mansart. Visit the sumptuous main apartments on the first floor where the climax is the Hall of Mirrors, where 17 great mirrors face tall arched windows. See, too, the Royal Chapel and a walk through the splendid gardens designed by André Le Notre .

You can also visit the Musée des Carosses housing a collection of royal carriages. In the Versailles gardens, the Grand and Petit Trianons (small palaces) await your visit, as does the charming Marie Antoinette farm.

In the afternoon, we will take you to visit Chartres. The town has the greatest Gothic cathedral in Europe. Begun in 1020, during the Middle Ages, the Romanesque Chartres Cathedral was destroyed by fire in 1194. Peasants and nobles together rebuilt the church in the Gothic style in just 25 years. Few alterations were made after 1250, so Chartres Cathedral is a true "Bible in Stone". The Gothic Nave, Royal Portal, Apsidal Chapel, fabulous Stained-Glass Windows are among the cathedral's treasures to be seen.
